Sözlükte “çirkin bulmak, kötü görmek, istememek; meşakkat, sıkıntı, zorluk” gibi anlamlara gelen kerh (kürh, kerâhet, kerâhiyyet) kökünden türeyen mekrûh kelimesi “içerisinde zorluk ve sıkıntı bulunan, hoşa gitmeyen, çirkin ve kötü görülen şey” demektir.
